Everyday fashion trends are featured as key cultural artifacts at NYC’s modern art museum

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City is showing off a collection of contemporary apparel and accessories identified as objects with high cultural currency—easily recognizable trends that played a role in shaping modern life.

The exhibit, Items: Is Fashion Modern?, hosts 111 pieces including the iconic pieces like the leather jacket, Levis 501s and the Breton shirt.

‘Items’ is the first fashion exhibit shown at the MoMA since 1944.

What makes ‘Items’ enjoyable is how you don’t need to be interested in fashion to visit the exhibit—all of these items are recognizable to people of all generations, from all over the world, throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

I saw ‘Items’ with my boyfriend and we commented on our own nostalgic moments throughout the exhibit. Even though I grew up in the United States and he grew up in France, we were both able to relate to most of the clothing and accessories—so many clothing trends were displayed with French designers (Chanel’s little black dress, YSL’s smoking suit, Lacoste polo etc.)
