As someone who proudly touts their coastal Rhode Island roots, it had never been a priority to visit anywhere beyond the Ocean State during the summer. There was always a curiosity to splurge on a long weekend in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard but never a desire to head to the Hamptons or the North Fork.
And if we’re being entirely honest, I had no idea what people were referring to when discussing the “fork” geography at the east end of Long Island—although now I vaguely recall one of my high school English teachers explaining this concept while discussing The Great Gatsby.
Anyways.

It has been a gift to explore the North Fork in recent months.
The landscape is quaint, quiet, and well-measured in its balance of nature and the modern world.
The acres of farmland in the North Fork have not yet given way to development. It seems that several hospitality groups have already invested in the North Fork, but in a thoughtful way that reflects the landscape. Quaint, quiet, and well-measured—at least for now.
In my view, simplicity is real luxury. The façade of simplicity in the Hamptons is comical in comparison—unless you have the real means to purchase the peace that comes with the territory.
If the reputation of the Hamptons conjures up a forced clean aesthetic—something that is intended to conceal insecurity under a sheer shroud of loud luxury—the North Fork offers a natural antidote. There is a familiar feeling of easy, golden magic that reminds me of summers past in South County and even in Newport.
While there are ten different communities that make up the North Fork, this post is going to focus mostly on Greenport because it’s the place where I’ve spent the most time. I do believe that each neighborhood has something unique to offer, so be sure to do additional research—hint: The North Forker is a good place to start.

General Notes about Greenport, NY
I cannot take credit for the analogy below—and sadly cannot find the proper publication to credit at this time—but this rings true:
The Hamptons : Manhattan.
The North Fork : Brooklyn.
Greenport is incredibly family-friendly for children of all ages as well as young couples expecting. With that being said, this is also a great place to come for a couple’s getaway, bachelorette parties, and weddings.
The key to enjoying Greenport and the surrounding towns is to take in the scenery at a relaxed pace. Downtown Greenport is very walkable and everything else is only a few minutes drive.
As for packing your suitcase, excessive glam is wasted effort. Polished casual comfort is recommended.

Getting to Greenport, NY
If you have the option, traveling by ferry is the most efficient way to get to the North Fork. Between the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry and the New London-Orient ferry, there are ample times to select from during the high season. The New London-Orient ferry does offer a connection to the Block Island Ferry.
If you are staying in the South Fork (read: the Hamptons), it’s as easy as traveling through Shelter Island and taking the South and North ferries—the ferries run every 12-15 minutes and payments are cash only.
And if you’re driving from New York City during rush hour…good luck.

Where to Stay in Greenport, NY
Hotel Moraine
A private piece of paradise, the chic boutique hotel offers guests respite from the hurriedness of everyday life. The 20-room property allows the staff to craft a tailored experience for each guest—everything from a surprise engagement on the private beach to children’s crafts on Sundays. Hotel Moraine also works well for weddings up to 100 guests and corporate retreats. For reference, in some ways, Hotel Moraine reminds me of a more contemporary version of The Weekapaug Inn in Rhode Island. The concept of nature meeting modern convenience thrives here, so Hotel Moraine is best suited for the traveler looking for a relaxed vibe with a high-touch level of service. A drink on the lawn during sunset is a must.

Sound View Greenport
Arguably the most popular pick in Greenport for a good reason—all 65 rooms have direct access to the pebble beach and sunset views. There is also a pool, beach bar, cocktail lounge, and restaurant, The Halyard, directly above the water, which is a draw by itself. The design of the Sound View Greenport feels like being on a beautifully maintained ship. The tasteful nautical theme is best translated in the lobby and extends to The Halyard, but also shows well in the rooms. All in all, Sound View Greenport perfectly accommodates a range of guests who enjoy the beach and various activities.

Harbor Front Inn
Located in downtown Greenport, the Harbor Front Inn is an affordable option for those looking to stay put in town or spend more time on Shelter Island and travel to the South Fork during the day. The pool is a welcome amenity on the property. As of summer 2025, the hotel has completed a beautiful renovation of its guest rooms and lobby. It’s worth noting that Harbor Front Inn is a sister property of Sound View Greenport, so guests have access to both hotels’ amenities (read: Sound View’s beach access).

American Beech Hotel
The most playful vibe in downtown Greenport can be found at this 13-room hotel and its main restaurant, also named American Beech, and three bars. Each room at the American Beech Hotel has its own unique decor, and the suites are especially spacious. The complimentary continental breakfast is delivered to the room in an adorable picnic basket with everything you need to start your day.

The Shoals Suites & Slips
Less than 10 minutes away from downtown Greenport, The Shoals Suites & Slips sits pretty overlooking Bud’s Pond and Shelter Island Sound, tucked in between marinas. The name of the hotel highlights what sets this property apart from the rest—the 20-room property also offers 20 boat slips. For those who didn’t arrive by boat—or don’t feel like driving their own for dinner—The Shoals Suites & Slips now offers dock-to-dine charters to nearby restaurants in partnership with Ride Shore. Arriving at Duryea’s Orient Point by boat? Dis oui.

Where to Eat in Greenport, NY
The bar and restaurant scene does not disappoint. Most restaurants work with local farms to source fresh, in-season produce as well as feature selections from local vineyards.
As previously mentioned, downtown Greenport is very walkable—not to mention stroller-friendly for young families—so it’s not unreasonable to take a quick turn along Front Street to see what you’re in the mood for.
If you would prefer to take a quick drive or bike ride outside of downtown, you will be handsomely rewarded with a delicious meal and idyllic waterfront views.

Activities in Greenport, NY
Ferry over to Shelter Island
Perfectly situated between Greenport and Sag Harbor, Shelter Island has been a known and relaxed escape from the South Fork. For a full day-trip excursion itinerary, explore the trails and grounds at Sylvester Manor, then have lunch at Salt Waterfront Grill Bar, and end the day with drinks at Sunset Beach. For longer stays, unwind at The Pridwin Hotel or The Ram’s Head Inn and take the South Ferry to access the Hamptons.
Make your own bouquet at North Fork Flower Farm
In addition to creating beautiful arrangements for weddings and events in the area, North Fork Flower Farm also offers both public and private floral-arranging workshops.
Explore the North Fork by yacht charter
There’s no better way to spend a summer day on the water! Whether it’s a local tour at sunset or a scenic transport to a popular waterfront restaurant, several companies offer private and public charters—Rideshore, Peconic Bay Sunset Cruises, and East End Charters each have their own exclusive packages.
Book tastings at local vineyards
The North Fork is home to over 60 vineyards, so there is plenty of variety to explore within a short distance. While each vineyard has its own tasting room, booking a wine tour through a company that offers transportation may be your best bet.
I’m not going to lie, I was unsure about trying the local wines when I first came to Greenport. During my brief period working in wine retail, I had the pleasure of trying many amazing wines (mostly European) and the abominable pain of trying terrible wines (mostly domestic).
I have been pleasantly surprised by the offerings that I’ve tried while having dinner in Greenport—do not hesitate to buy a bottle from Macari, RGNY, Borghese, or One Woman Wines for the table.
