Last Sunday, the French people elected Emmanuel Macron as their nation’s president and took a stand against the growing populist influence.
Macron, 39, won 66% of the vote over his opponent Marine Le Pen, the far-right National Front candidate. Although the media labels Macron as a centrist, he identifies himself as someone “of the left” who is willing to collaborate with the right. Le Pen, meanwhile, shares values closely aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The results of several crucial elections, including the Brexit vote and the United States presidential election, threatened the progress of the Western world. Macron’s victory in France, along with the upcoming French legislative elections in June, will build a clearer picture of Europe’s future.
As much as I love macarons, champagne and travel, I am more than aware that it doesn’t qualify me as a European foreign policy expert.

As someone currently experiencing the effects of Brexit I’m so relieved by this result. It goes to show that there is a level of sanity left in today’s politics
