Local Farm Stands in Fairfield County

Shaggy Coos farm stand in Easton, CT

It’s hard to pass up a good farmers’ market or farm stand.

I first learned to appreciate farmers’ markets and farm stands when I lived in Newport, Rhode Island—I enjoyed exploring the Aquidneck Growers’ Market on Memorial Boulevard on Wednesdays after work or heading to Sweet Berry Farm for pick-your-own apples and pumpkins in late summer and early fall.

My interest in buying local food grew significantly while I was living in France. Shopping the Sunday market in the morning was one of my favorite rituals—the best meals that I cooked in the apartment sourced key ingredients from the market (I still think about the duck parmentier and the roasted chicken). Wherever I traveled in France, I always took the opportunity to visit the markets or stands and try regional specialties such as banon cheese in Provence or oysters in Cancale and Île d’Oléron.

While people are familiar with shopping at farmers’ markets, visiting the farms in person is also a great excuse to explore the area. Purchasing directly from farms is a wonderful way to enjoy fresh, less processed food and support the local agricultural community (read: your neighbors).

I recently realized that I’m more familiar with local farms in southern Rhode Island than with those in southwestern Connecticut, my own backyard.

This list focuses on local farms in Fairfield County that have farm stands to shop for local produce, meat, dairy, and prepared specialty foods.
